The story of Nonita Fashion began in my childhood, shaped by my deep admiration for my grandmother, a woman as formidable as she was graceful. Standing just 5 feet tall, she was a force like no other—a style icon whose collection of sarees remains unparalleled in my eyes. My grandmother, known fondly as Kaytee (Kirpal), was born in pre-independence India, now Frontier Pakistan, and attended the University of Chicago in the 1940s, before India gained independence. She lived a long, fashionable life, filled with stories that inspired me. Here’s the most precious one: how Nonita was born.
Right from Patola to Paithani to Brocade, to Kaanjivaram to kachipuri to Kalam Kari to Mysore silk to chanderi to Bandhani to the elegant Georgettes and Chiffons and French Chiffons to the Ikat Silks - her saree collection was invaluable, exquisite and rare.
I remember learning how to wear her Crepe Silk, Banarasi Silk, Kota weave and Pochampali Silk sarees as she stood there patiently showing me the meaning of each fold and fall. I would pretend to be the cabin crew of Air India of the late 80s poised so elegantly in her saree and off I would go into my dream world travelling the beautiful skies of my imagination with her sitting right by me and me looking like her mini me in her Crepe Silk sarees.
In our indian culture they say if you can be a tinge on your mum, you are blessed. I believe I carry a lot of my mother’s blessings and teachings but what I am most proud of is the love for indian textile that my grandmother had which I have inherited and is part of my very being.
Nonita Fashion is a labor of love, deeply rooted in my family history and rich cultural heritage. My grandmother's diverse and rare collection of sarees is not just a testament to India’s rich textile history but also serves as a connection to my past and an inspiration for my present endeavors.
Jamdani sarees, Jamevaar sarees, Tussar Silk sarees in my grandmother’s closet bring me a sense of comfort nothing else in the world can.
Her Mulberry silk sarees are lying in her trunk preserved to the tee.
My knowledge of sarees comes from her love of Indian heritage. She taught me the value of keeping the tradition alive. And out of that love I present Nonita Fashion to you for Nino is my mother’s beloved name and we are taking my grandmothers memories Trans Atlantic (TA).
Noni”TA” is more than just a brand; it's a tribute to the love, culture, and artistry passed down through generations. As former Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), we know the struggle of buying Indian outfits and all the unnecessary mess that comes along with shipping, delivery, and fit issues. Here we are to ensure you get your dream outfit without the huff and puff.
Welcome, and enjoy the journey with us!
